Dear Parents

Congratulations on the birth of your baby boy.

At Hamilton Circumcision Clinic, we provide safe, gentle, and evidence-based circumcision using established medical techniques in a supportive environment.

Circumcision is a minor surgical procedure that removes the foreskin of the penis. Families may choose circumcision for religious, cultural, personal, or health-related reasons. In recent years, circumcision has also been associated with potential long-term hygiene and health benefits.

Circumcision is ideally performed within the first month of life, as healing is typically faster and outcomes are optimal. We offer circumcision for infants up to 12 months of age. Technique, risks, and cost may vary as the child gets older.

For premature infants, the appropriate timing of circumcision is determined based on gestational age and overall medical readiness.

Safe & Professional Circumcision Care

Health Benefits of Circumcision

Circumcision has been associated with:

  • Reduced risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Reduced risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV
  • Reduced risk of penile cancer
  • Reduced risk of cervical cancer in sexual partners
  • Reduced risk of foreskin-related conditions such as phimosis and balanitis (tight foreskin and infection)

Circumcision Method Used

We use the Plastibell method, a well-established technique known for its safety and good cosmetic outcomes.

This method is also used at the SickKids Circumcision Clinic at The Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto. A small plastic ring is placed over the head of the penis and typically falls off on its own within 7 to 14 days.

Compared with other methods such as the Gomco clamp, Mogen clamp, or traditional suturing, the Plastibell device is associated with a lower risk of bleeding.

Our Physician & Appointments

At Hamilton Circumcision Clinic, circumcision is performed by Dr. Yaghini by appointment.

Dr. Yaghini has over 20 years of experience performing circumcision using various techniques.

He is happy to meet with families prior to the procedure to answer questions and discuss the process, should you wish to have a consultation before making your decision.

Referrals from family physicians are accepted, and self-referrals are welcome.

If you bring a referral letter from your family doctor, you will receive a 10% discount.

At the end of the procedure, you will be provided with gauze and antibiotic ointment, along with clear aftercare instructions, which are all you need to care for your baby at home.

What to Expect Before and After Circumcision

Before the Procedure

  • No special preparation is required
  • Your baby may be fed before the appointment
  • It is recommended to bathe your baby prior to the visit, as bathing should be avoided for 1–2 days afterward
  • Please bring a pacifier to help soothe your baby during the procedure

Procedure & Pain Control

  • The procedure takes approximately 15–20 minutes
  • Local anesthesia (dorsal penile nerve block) is used to minimize pain and discomfort

Aftercare & Healing

Detailed aftercare instructions, including pictures, will be reviewed with you after the procedure.

  • Healing usually takes 7–14 days
  • Mild swelling, bruising, or discoloration is normal
  • Small amounts of yellow discharge or light blood staining on the diaper may occur

Basic Care Instructions

  • For the first 4–5 days, change the gauze with each diaper change and apply antibiotic ointment
  • After 4–5 days, apply petroleum jelly on tip of penis to prevent sticking to the diaper
  • Change diapers as usual and fasten securely
  • Shower is allowed starting the second day after circumcision
  • It is safe to wash penis if contaminated with stool
  • Avoid submerging your baby in water for the first 4–5 days
  • You can give baby Tylenol for the first day and night of procedure

When to Contact a Healthcare Professional

Complications are uncommon but can occur.
Please seek medical attention if:

  • Your baby does not urinate within 12 hours
  • Your baby develops a fever
  • There is persistent or excessive bleeding
  • Pain appears severe or prolonged
  • There is foul-smelling discharge
  • The Plastibell ring falls off within the first 1–2 days, or has not fallen off after 14 days

Ongoing Support

A 24/7 direct emergency contact with the physician is provided after the procedure for any urgent questions or concerns.

Your child's safety, comfort, and best cosmetic outcome are our highest priorities.

- Lawa M Amin

"Overall, I’m very satisfied with the service. The environment was clean and welcoming, and the team made us feel comfortable throughout the visit. Communication was clear and professional. The only reason for four stars instead of five is a slight delay in scheduling, but everything else was excellent."
